Vasu (1902-1992)

Another contemporary of cartoonist Shankar was also a cartoonist from Kollam: Vasu, known as Srinivasa Vasu. Although he was a native of Kollam, he spent most of his life in Madras. It was Pothan Joseph, who understood the value of newspaper cartoons while serving as the editor of *The Indian Express*, who nurtured and promoted Vasu as a cartoonist. That association later led Vasu to work as a cartoonist for the evening newspaper *Star of India*, *Dawn* of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and *The Pioneer*. It can be seen that both cartoonist Shankar and Vasu followed the style of David Low.

As a cartoonist, Vasu maintained good relationships with major figures in political and social spheres such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajaji, and J. R. D. Tata. It was before Indian independence that Vasu produced some of his most powerful cartoons. Many of them can be seen as cartoons that strengthened the freedom movement. After *Dawn*, he worked as a cartoonist for numerous publications including *National Call*, *National Herald*, *The Pioneer*, and *Shankar’s Weekly*, before later becoming a cartoonist for various newspapers including *The Hindu*. Vasu was a person who made journalism as a cartoonist his livelihood, earned a respectable salary, and worked with a deep sense of commitment to the ideals of the freedom struggle. In 1972, cartoonist Vasu bid farewell to cartooning. He passed away in Chennai on September 20, 1992.
