P S Govindapillai - First Cartoonist from Kerala.
P.S. Govindapillai was the brother of P.S. Neelakantapillai, the editor and publisher of the entertainment magazine *Vidushakan*. Govindapillai was not only an artist; he was also a good singer. Both were sons of Judge Sivasankarapillai from the renowned Kongal Devi Azhikath family of Paravur in Kollam district. Sivasankarapillai had four sons: P.S. Narayanapillai (High Court advocate), P.S. Neelakantapillai (journalist), P.S. Balakrishnapillai (high school headmaster), and P.S. Govindapillai (cartoonist, artist, and singer).
Humorous articles and cartoons criticizing the Diwan and the Maharaja of Travancore were regularly published in *Vidushakan*. Its style was to sharply satirize and criticize their injustices and excesses through biting political humor. As a result, it often had to face persecution from centers of power. *Vidushakan* was also confiscated for writing and drawing in support of the freedom struggle and against British rule. The British exiled P. S. Govinda Pillai, one of its principal cartoonists. P. S. Govinda Pillai, who was exiled for practicing journalism through cartooning, represents a unique chapter in the history of Kerala journalism.
His imprisonment was in the Cellular Jail (Kala Pani) in the Andaman Islands. After completing his prison term and returning, Govinda Pillai fell ill. He died 1932 while lying in the lap of his wife, Janaki Amma.
