Kerala Varma (1924-2010)

(1924-2010) Kevy (A.R.Kerala Varma),
Cartoonist Kevy, Kerala Varma, was a person who came to the Thrippunithura Palace after marrying from the Harippad Ananthapuram Palace and gained recognition in the field of cartooning under the mentorship of Shankar in Delhi. Kerala Varma was also a descendant of Valiya Koithampuran and A.R. Raja Raja Varma. However, he excelled in the field of cartooning. Kerala Varma was born on September 22, 1924, at the Harippad Ananthapuram Palace as the son of M. Vasudevan Namboothiri of Harippad and Pooyamnal Ambalika Thampuratti.

Kerala Varma’s works appeared in publications such as Hindustan Times, Indian Express, Eastern Economics, and Shankar’s Weekly. Kerala Varma, who had been drawing cartoons for Blitz and other publications in Mumbai, was invited by Shankar in 1953 and became a cartoonist at Shankar’s Weekly. Feeling dissatisfied with Shankar’s strict, teacher-like behavior, he resigned from Shankar’s Weekly in 1960. However, his cordial relationship with Shankar continued afterward. He drew cartoons for left-leaning publications in Delhi for many years. Cartoon posters prepared by Kerala Varma were a common sight in many protests held in Delhi.

During the 1962 Sino-Indian War, Kerala Varma became disillusioned by the ideological conflict between two countries that both espoused communist ideas. It was during this period that he joined Eastern Economics as a cartoonist. At that time, Kerala Varma even drew anti-communist cartoons. It was when he joined Eastern Economics as a cartoonist that he changed from the name Kerala Varma to the abbreviated name “K.V.” He was honored with honorary membership by the Kerala Cartoon Academy. While leading a retired life with his wife Padmavathi Thampuran at Padmalayam in Thrippunithura, he passed away in Thrippunithura on July 23, 2010.
